The state government had increased the number of wards in the city to 30 with the approval of the proposal of border expansion of the Manpa administration. The proposal was redesigned by the Manpa administration by redesigning the election ward and sent to the state government, which was published for objections on September 3. After objections, it was sent back to the state government. The state government finally approved it after some amendments on Saturday. After this, elections for Surat Mahanagar Palika will be held on the basis of new ward demarcation.
Significantly, on the initiative of the state government, the Manpa administration sent a proposal to expand the boundary of the city after 14 years in Gandhinagar. After the border expansion, the area of the city has increased to more than 472 sq km. Earlier in the year 2006, the scope of the city was expanded. The new expansion has included Kanakpur Kansad and Sachin municipality as well as 31 other villages in Surat.
