Warner Media International recently announced that popular English film channels HBO and WB1 will be shut down in India and four other South Asian countries from December 15.
Warner Media International has decided to close HBO SD and HD linear film channels and WB linear film channels in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Maldives. Instead, the studio plans to invest more in their children’s cartoon network and POGO brand. The studio plans to expand its local animation production in the South Asian region.
“After 20 years of success for the HBO linear film channel in South Asia and more than a decade with the WB linear film channel, it was difficult to make that decision. Said Siddharth Jain, senior vice president and managing director of Warnermedia’s entertainment network in South Asia.
Warner Media has a keen interest in India and is committed to evaluating good opportunities to serve valued customers here, he added.
Currently HBO content has been found in India with Disney + Hotstar’s streaming platform. However, HBO will soon launch its own streaming platform HBO Max.
Gerhard Zeller, head of Warnermedia International, hinted at the release of HBO Max in India, saying, “If you want to be a strong global player, you have to be strong in Asia-Pacific. In India we don’t have the scale that we want and where we should be. To get there, the work horse would be the HBO Max. “
