Digital Desk, Mumbai. The stock market of the country gained momentum on Friday, the fifth and last day of the trading week. The Sensex gained 254.57 points or 0.64% to end at 39982.98 and the Nifty gained 82.10 points or 0.70% to end at 11762.50. About 1459 shares gained, 1135 shares declined and 171 shares remained unchanged.
The Nifty was the biggest gainer among JSW Steel, Tata Steel, BPCL, Divis Labs and Hindalco Industries. While UPL, HCL Tech, M&M, Asian Paints and Reliance Industries saw the biggest decline. In the sectors, except IT, metals, banks, pharma all closed at a rapid pace. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gained 1 percent each.
The market had closed in the fall on Thursday
Earlier on Thursday, the market closed down heavily. The Sensex was down by 1,066.33 points or 2.61% at 39728.41 and the Nifty was down 290.60 points or 2.43% at 11680.40.
