No signs of far-reaching assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, paving way for DDC

After the release of all the senior politicians in the Valley including PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti, the Central Government has indicated to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system in Jammu and Kashmir to speed up development and ensure public representation. For this, the Central Government has amended the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act 1989 and cleared the way for setting up District Development Council (DDC). Its purpose is to promote development in the valley.

Emphasis on strengthening DDC system

According to the revised provisions of Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act 1989, the District Development Council (DDC) will replace the District Development Board (DDB). Please tell that the District Development Board also included cabinet ministers, ministers of state, MPs, MLAs, MLCs as members. Now DDC itself will be considered as the central axis of development and planning at the district level.

There will be 14 constituencies in each district

Now every district of Jammu and Kashmir will be divided into 14 regional constituencies. Elections will be held in these areas very soon. According to the information, notification of holding elections in 14 regional constituencies of each district can be issued within a week or 10 days. The winner will elect one of their presidents as a vice president. After the election is over, the DDC will work to implement all the development schemes at the district level.

Resources for the DDC’s development plans will be provided from the Union Territory budget. Along with this, necessary budget will also be allocated under various centrally sponsored schemes.

Local bodies will get strength

Local bodies will be empowered as per the revised rules. Its purpose is to strengthen the political process at the local level and make the public a participant in it. This has also indicated that there is no sign of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir right now.

End of democratic process decided

Omar Abdullah of the National Conference said that our party is studying the revised provisions by the Center. Senior PDP leader Naeem Akhtar said that this would end political processes in the Valley. Its purpose is to suppress the voice of the people at the local level.
