Jammu. The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday late evening released PDP President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti from house arrest after 14 months. Mehbooba Mufti was taken into custody under the Public Safety Act (PSA) on August 4, a day before the removal of Articles 370 and 35A from Jammu and Kashmir. He has been kept under house arrest since then.
On August 5 last year, 444 people were detained under the Precautionary PSA with the removal of the provisions of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Most of these people have been released with the condition that they will not issue any political statement. Earlier, President Farooq Abdullah, President and MP of the National Congress, who was under house arrest, was released on 15 March and Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Congress on 25 March. Apart from this, many other leaders were also released by the administration but Mehbooba Mufti was kept under house arrest till now. The detention of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was extended by three months in August.
Jammu and Kashmir Principal Secretary Information Rohit Kansal tweeted this evening and informed about the release of Mehbooba. Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court for her release, on which, on September 29, the court hearing, sought response from the Jammu and Kashmir administration. The court had asked how many days of detention can be done under the Public Safety Act and how long will Mehbooba be kept in custody. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought some time on this.
In Mehbooba’s absence, her Twitter account was used by her daughter Iltija Mufti. Iltija tweeted, ‘With the period of illegal detention of Mehbooba Mufti, I would like to thank all those who supported me during this period. I appreciate all of you. Now Iltija, I am signing off from this account. ‘The party’s official Twitter handle has told that party president Mehbooba Mufti will address a press conference on Friday, October 16, 2020. The timing of the press will be shared separately.
