Gandhinagar / Ahmedabad. In view of the Corona outbreak, the state government has postponed the local body elections for three months. The tenure of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar Mahanagar Nigam, 231 Tehsil Panchayat, 31 District Panchayats of the state is ending in November-December. Later, after reviewing the circumstances, a decision will be taken to hold elections.
On Monday, the Election Commission issued a notification stating that panchayats have been postponed for three months in view of the outbreak of Corona. The State Election Commission was also preparing to hold local body elections in November-December immediately after the by-election. There were protests by 15 different unions involved in the election process due to Corona’s transition.
It is noteworthy that tenure of 55 municipalities and representatives of 231 tehsil panchayats in the state is ending in the month of November. Apart from this, the tenure of the boards of Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, Surat, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar municipalities expires in December.
