Zinedine Zidane scored four points in half time on Saturday but Real Madrid could not find a place in life as his side lost 1-0 to newly promoted Cadiz in La Liga. Sergio Ramos’ only action change at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium was as the Madrid captain spent his second half-century in an ice-covered stand around his left knee. Madrid said the injury was not serious and it is doubtful that Ramos was involved in the first Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, as well as in the Clasico three days later.
If the Barcelona players are watching, they will realize that Madrid is there when they meet at the Camp Nou next week.
Ramos’ long absence will be a nightmare for the Spanish champions, whose dreamy performances will surely give them an early impetus.
Atletico Madrid had previously beaten Celta Vigo 2-0, Luis Suarez had started scoring at Balidos, while Barca had to face Getafe.
This is Cadiz’s first season in his first flight in 14 years and his first win over Real Madrid in 2 in, but he could have won more.
Their prize is second in the table, only to be denied a place at the top due to differences in the opponent’s goals.
Isco, Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez were all expelled by Zidane. Reacted to the abduction on his side in the first half.
Eder Militao, Casmiro, Federal Valverde and Marco Asensio came in, while the astonished Tony Cross left in the second period and was replaced by Luka Jovic.
But Madrid’s performance improved greatly and in the end they got only two shots on target.
Cadiz would have secured three group places in the first quarter of an hour if Ramos had prevented Alvaro Negredo from reaching the final before Negredo was ready for the opener.
His dazzling header caught Anthony Lozano, he overlooked beyond Madrid’s sleeping defense and a fierce attack on Thibaut Courtois.
In the second half, Vinicius Jr. opened the scoring and Karim Benzema hit the crossbar with a long shot.
But Cadiz didn’t bother much.
Earlier, Suarez partnered Diego Costa for the first time and scored as Atletico Madrid beat Seattle Vigo 2-0.
But the Suarez-Costa combination started early as Costa was injured in the second half.
– ‘Try to adapt’ –
Sitting in the stands, Costa was seen with his face in his hands, and he was stumbling even after the final whistle was blown.
He is now set to miss the Atletico Champions League opener at Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Teleco finished fourth after the win, one point behind Real Madrid and one point ahead of Barcelona. Celta, meanwhile, have won just one of their first six games and are 13th.
It was a much-needed victory for Atletico after a back-to-back goalless draw after an early 1-1 win over Granada.
Suarez made his debut that day. Granada came off the bench to score twice while already down and out, but his early strike turned the game against Celta, until Yannick Carrasco came in second from injury.
Diego Simeone had set aside Suarez and Costa as substitutes for each of Atletico’s first three games, but he paired up on the bench of Joao Felix from the start in Balidos.
Last month, Costa predicted they would be a handful together, “well, one bites and the other kicks.”
There was a flicker of chemistry, with Suarez missing a second-second chance through the Costa Creek that caused him pain in his lower leg.
“It’s important because of his career and what he did at Atletico,” Suarez said. “Never before have we tried to adapt to each other.”
Felix was also impressed when he arrived, and in Costa’s absence, Folix will provide a more structured, less resilient, foil for Suarez.
Felix had a curling shot after half-time to replace the injured Costa that hit the bar, allowing Carasco to return.
Earlier, Suarez put Atletico ahead in the sixth minute and 20-year-old left-back Manu Sanchez picked him up with a clever pull-back.
Lucas Torrera also made his debut. Uruguay signed a loan from Arsenal, who are enthusiastic and tidy in midfield.
