Bengaluru, October 10 (IANS). Encouraging people to take care of their mental health amid the Kovid-19 epidemic, Karnataka’s Medical Education Minister K.K. Sudhakar advised people suffering from mental problems to get counseling in state government hospitals.

“Mental health is just as important as physical health, especially during an epidemic,” Sudhakar said in a statement on Friday before the worldwide Mental Health Day. The state government is providing counseling facility in hospitals across the state.

A medical doctor by profession, Sudhakar, said that during the epidemic there is a need to bring more awareness about mental health to prevent depression-like problems and suicides and to fight coronovirus.

He said, according to the WHO report, 7.5 percent of people nationwide suffer from mental depression. India accounts for 15 percent of global mental illness. According to a survey, 20 percent of Indians will suffer from mental illness by the end of this year. Therefore mental health is also important.

Referring that the state has a mental health authority to deal with the challenge, the minister said that 7.13 lakh people have availed the personalized counseling facility available in government hospitals across the state.
