new Delhi. Demand for work under MNREGA is steadily decreasing. In September, around 2 crore families applied for work under MNREGA whereas in August the number was 2.02 crore. Work demand under MNREGA has decreased for the fourth consecutive month.
According to the reports, many of the migrant laborers who returned to their homes during the lockdown have returned to the city. On April 20, the government granted partial exemption to the lockdown restrictions, after which the demand for work under the MNREGA increased manifold compared to the previous years.
In the last 10 days of April, 1.30 crore families applied for work under MNREGA. The number reached 3.46 crore in May and 4.06 crore in June.
Why did the demand for work decrease?
But after June it started to decrease. There was a steady decline in the period from July to September.
The Ministry of Rural Development says that the demand for work under MGNREGA has come down due to normal monsoon, spurt in agricultural activities and return of migrant laborers to cities. It decreases during monsoon whereas during summer
