Shimla . Defense Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated on Monday inaugurated 44 bridges built in various parts of the country, including two important bridges on the 475 km long Manali-Leh highway.
Armed forces will help
These bridges are in strategically important areas and will help the military forces in ensuring rapid movement of troops and weapons. These bridges include the 360 meter long Darcha-Barsi steel bridge at Darcha in Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh and the 110 meter long Palachan bridge near Manali in Kullu district. The Darcha Bridge over the Bhaga River is the second longest bridge in the country, with an outlay of Rs 27.25 crore. In addition to improving traffic flow, the new bridge will prove to be helpful in carrying and transporting heavy goods.
Darcha is located at the end of the state at an altitude of 11,020 feet, about 33 kilometers ahead of the district headquarters Keylong. A road from Darcha leads to Shinku La (Pass), the shortest route leading to the remote Zanskar region towards Padma, which is about 30 kilometers from Leh. The 297-km-long Darcha-Nimhu-Padma road has been identified as the third strategic alternative to Ladakh in view of threats from Pakistan and China. Officials said the double lane road is under construction and is expected to be completed by 2023.

In addition, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) is studying the feasibility of constructing a tunnel under the 13.5 km long Shinku La, like the Atal tunnel near Manali. “The tunnel under Shinku La will significantly reduce the distance between Manali and Leh.”
