new Delhi. Facing a steady decline in usage for the past several years, Yahoo has decided to shut down Yahoo Groups from 15 December. Verizon, which bought Yahoo in 2017, announced its decision on Tuesday. Yahoo has been the largest message board system of its time on the web, which is now going to end its journey later this year.
The company said in a message released on its website that Yahoo Groups has been experiencing a steady decline in usage for the past several years. In the same period we also saw that customers want premium and reliable content. While making such decisions is never easy, however, we must sometimes make difficult decisions about products that are good for our long-term strategy. We will now focus on other areas of business.
The Yahoo Groups service was launched in 2001 and it could not stand up strongly against Reddit, Google Groups and Facebook Groups. New groups will not be able to be created from October 12 and after December 15, people will not be able to send or receive mail through Yahoo Groups. The website will also not be available. However, Yahoo Mail will continue to work as before.
The company said that emails sent and received by you will remain in your email, but from December 15 it will not be possible to send and receive mail to group members. American wireless communications service provider Verizon bought Yahoo’s Internet business in 2017 for $ 4.8 billion.
