The Congress termed the disgrace of leaders like former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the BJP leader’s closure of madrasas in Maharashtra.
State Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said, “BJP leaders of the state have lost their mental balance to target the Grand Alliance government and to malign Maharashtra and Mumbai.” Now they are insulting their own leaders by making such statements.
He made this remark, citing a demand by BJP MLA Atul Bhatkalkar, who challenged the state’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to close madrasas or Islamic schools to prove his Hindutva. Taking a dig at this, the Congress said that this is contrary to Prime Minister Modi’s Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas slogan.
Sawant said that in August 2001, the then HRD Minister Murali Manohar Joshi had said that the late Prime Minister Vajpayee had no intention of tampering with or interfering with the madrasas and also suggested that in addition to religious subjects, modern subjects like science, mathematics , Social science and general knowledge should be included in their syllabus.
In February 2002, Joshi said that the Center was providing financial assistance to one thousand madrasas.
He said, when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, the BJP’s election manifesto in the 2012 state elections promised to modernize all madrasas. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP twice mentioned a similar agenda for madrasas.
He claimed that in June 2019, Union Minority Development Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also announced measures to improve and modernize madrasas by training teachers in Hindi and English languages and even computers.
Sawant said, the state BJP has forgotten that Prime Minister Modi has given the slogan of Quran in one hand and computer in the other hand for Muslim youth.
Sawant said, it would have been better if, given the historical background, Bhatkalkar would have consulted party superiors before demanding the closure of the state’s madrasas.
